Balazs Vedres
Associate Professor, Central European University, Hungary
Director Center for Network Science, Hungary
Balazs's research furthers the agenda of understanding historical dynamics in network systems, combining insights from network science, historical sociology, and studies of complex systems in physics and biology. His contribution is to combine historical sensitivities to patterns of processes in time with a network analytic sensitivity to patterns of connectedness cross-sectionally. A key element of this work was the adoption of optimal matching sequence analysis to historical network data. His research results were published in the top journals of sociology, with two recent articles in the American Journal of Sociology exploring the notion of structural folds: creative tensions in intersecting yet cognitively diverse cohesive communities. Balazs's recent research follows video game developers and jazz musicians as they weave collaborative networks through their projects and recording sessions. Balazs is the recipient of several awards and prizes. He is the founder and director of the Center for Network Science at Central European University.
Carl Nordlund
Research Fellow, Institute for Analytical Sociology
Linköping University, Sweden
Carl's research furthers the agenda of understanding complex systems of relationships, combining insights from network science, economic history, development studies and programming. His contribution to the field combines mathematical sociology with international relations and network analytical methods to better understand patterns of relationships in the world economy and their implications. A key element of this work was the development of blockmodeling methods for valued networks. His research results were published in top journals of sociology, with a recent article in Social Networks showcasing his deviational approach to blockmodeling of valued networks. Carl's recent research proposes an alternative pattern-sensitive heuristic for valued networks, demonstrating its value on note-sharing data, journal citation data, and European trade. Carl is the recipient of several awards and prizes.
HOW TO GET HERE

The purpose of the Workshop series is multifolded:

  • Provide a forum for young and established researchers and practitioners to present their contributions to the state of the art research and development in network science applications to social and political problems.

  • Create flows between researchers and industry: on one hand to provide space for entrepreneurs to present their products which use a knowledge base derived from network research, on the other hand to allow businesses an outlook of recent research which can  be relevant for developing commercial or public products.

  • Give advanced students an opportunity to gather general knowledge on the topics presented and to expose them to both cutting edge research and product development processes.

Timisoara Workshops on Research Methods are hosted annually in November, covering a wide range of methodologies used in social science research. The workshops are designed to be a forum for productive discussions on substantive research in progress, and to promote and support collaboration among scholars and practitioners, while widening audience to advanced students. The event brings together for two days approximately 20 participants from several academic and industry institutions, and from different countries. The topic of discussion for this edition is applications of network science to social sciences, and the event is targeting contributions from scholars currently working in the workshop's field. The event is associated with the International Symposium on Ideologies, Values and Political Behaviors in Central and Eastern Europe, the annual international conference organized by the Department of Political Science at West University of Timisoara.
